White Noise App Reviews

Completely relaxing for an ADD artist

Artist with ADD and anxiety about deadllines, late nights, etc. etc., and looking for something soothing to work by: I found it in this app. White Noise has a number of soothing, comforting sounds that both drown out barking dogs, and unwelcome noises, as well as the opportunity to create your own mix of sounds and your own playlists. When a lot of work is needing to be done, I turn on my play list and FOCUS! I unreservedly recommend this app if you want to focus, relax, and when it is time, have background noise to fall asleep to. If you want to keep it off your desktop, which may be intrusive, just minimize. I love this app.

Love this app

I use this all the time while doing homework. Initially, I thought the recordings were too obviously repeating, but they either hid the seams better in later versions, or they just got longer recordings - I no longer notice the "loop." Just started using the "Mix Pad" feature of this, which allows you to mix various background/white noises together - currently working on homework listening to Brown Noise, Cars, Crickets, Extreme Rain, and Thunder - and its totally calming and great at making me not wonder which of my electronic items is making that almost imperceptible (and therefore more distracting) electronic buzz. Highly recommend!

GREAT on ipod touch. not so great on mac

I LOVE this app on my itouch, but the quality of the sounds lm getting my macs speakers leaves a lot to be desired. If im going to pay 5 bucks for this app on my mac then id like to have enchanced audio quality to go with it, otherwise, its just a copy of the ios app and isnt worth the 3 extra dollars. When i purchased this app, I bought it to play with music while i fell asleep. This works great if im using earphones but not so much if im listening through speakers ( which, im assuming, is why people buy the desktop version). It just sounds like Im listening to the sounds through overpowered earphones and not through speakers. I love everything else about this app, but its hard to enjoy the sounds themselves when they sound like theyre coming from a very concentrated source rather than feeling like the noises are all around me. I dont know if its just the kb rate, but if I just had the same listening experience as I do while using earphones then I wound gladly give this app 5 stars.

Good concept, but limited and repetive loops

The app has a "mix pad" where you drop sounds and then those sounds move around with configurable speed in a configurable radius, which is a great concept with which you can make some great ambient sounds. The problem is that the loops they give you are so short, that you end up with this repeating pattern that is so easy for your mind to lock on to that it becomes more distracting than anything else. I got this an a tool to make ambient sound while I work, and for that it is not at all useful. There needs to be much more randomness here IMO, although perhaps the predictable, stuttering nature of the sounds actually make it so that people focus on the sound only, and perhaps that helps them fall asleep?? In any case, the name "White Noise" is very misleading. It is not white, nor pink for that matter. It does make a decent alarm clock, if you prefer to wake up to a 10 second loop of beach sounds rather than a "beep beep beep." Perhaps by using the "WhiteNoiseCreator" (available on the devs site) one could make some longer loops that overlap less, but even then, tools like ChatterBlocker or even just tracks played in iTunes seem to be a simpler alternative. I still give it two stars for the great implementation of the mix pad, and were that a stand-alone app that allowed using arbitrary audio files, I would give it four or five.

Great for Studying

Great for when the library is loud and you just need to focus. Wide variety of sounds, which I do not find repetative at all. Mix Pad feature is also a plus.

Wow, just WOW!

Amazing app that makes me relax when I am busy. Nice I love it. Great sounds to concentrate!

Frustrating Update

I really like this app and I use it a lot, but the most recent update broke the music alarm functionality. Please fix this, TMSOFT!

Timers disable without relaunching the app.

At first I was pleased with the lite version of the software. It has lots of sounds (some Im not sure who could sleep to, but who knows?). So I purchased the full version. I setup a couple of timers that started my sounds at 11pm and stopped at 7am. After the first night the timers were disabled. I thought that perhaps I had done something incorrectly. I checked my values and it all seemed okay. I re-enabled my timers and it worked fine. The next day the timers were disabled again. I knew that I hadnt done that and so I contacted tech support for White Noise. Thats when I found out that the "logic" of the software is that after running the timer, they are disabled until you launch the app again. I leave it up all the time, so my timers get disabled. To me thats like haveing to turn your alarm clock "on" every morning to get an alarm each morning. To me once I enable a timer you shouldnt have to re-enable or relaunch the app. If I am the only one that thinks that way, so be it. But I thought I should review the app in case someone expects the app to perfrom differently. Perhaps I can script it someone to close the app and relaunch on a schedule- seems a bit much to do all that. I will still use the app but not the way I thought I would when I purchased it. Tech support was responsive to my email, just not to my issue.

Great for Tinnitus

Love ways I can combine sounds, and vary them to create my own presets. Some sound choices I doubt I will use because they dont seem relaxing to me like airplanes and city noises, but the choice of sounds is enough to keep my interest. I like combining cat purring with frogs chirps in background with ocean waves.

Still an awesome app

I use this app all the time to block out noises while I work. It helps me concentrate and remove distractions.

update not working This for pay app is now not working as before!

Do NOT Buy/Pay for this till they get it working. The update caused it to break. If you already have it do NOT update. There is no White Noise Support from the company or way that I can figure out to contact them. Click on the support link to see what I mean. Repeat. Update causes Mac version to NOT function!

Crashes! FIX IT!!!

I am running Snow Leopard and when I open the application it crashes immediately. It only started doing this since i updated. Its very frustrating when apps that I have paid for (not only for my iphone but for my mac) are not working properly.

White Noise "fix" response

Once the company was notified that WN and the Lite version were having a problem running under 10.7, they jumped right on it and did an awesomely fast fix for their customers needing this 5.6.3 update. Very professionally handled all around!!

Great App for keeping dogs quiet at night!

I downloaded the trial version of this app last night in an effort to get my girlfriend’s house dog to stop barking so that we could get some sleep. He has been keeping us awake night after night barking at anything he hears outside. I did a quick search, found this app, had it running in a couple minutes time and the dog didn’t bark anymore. This morning I purchased the full version, it is very impressive, much nicer than the lite version and well worth $4.99. I think this is something we will use every night. Not only to keep the dog from barking but because we both found the sounds very soothing. I highly recommend this to anyone needing to get a good night’s sleep.

Not amazing

I’ve been a fan-sleeper for years and none of these are helpful while sleeping. Need a soft box fan white noise track. I like the app and some of the options are probably great for some! Just didn’t seem to work great for me.

Great Tool for Misophonia Sufferers

Great Tool for Misophonia Sufferers I work in a small, quiet office where people frequently eat at their desks. When your ears are fatigued from listening to music for hours on end, white noise can be a huge relief. Not only does this app allow you to manage a large library of background noises and mix them together to create custom loops, but you can create white noise loops from your own recordings and share them with the community. Many of the included sounds are a bit lo-fi or mid-range heavy for headphone use, but I have been able to modify some of them to better suit my needs. An equalizer would be a nice addition. Another small annoyance is that the coverflow interface is not smooth and it scrolls backwards from the way the Finder and iTunes scroll. I would like to see a more native implementation of this. Overall, the relief White Noise provides me with is easily worth $4.99.

Good concept, bad design and implementation

I usually use a noise-generating website, but am about to go on vacation with no internet access, so I needed an offline app. This app has a lot of features, but a user interface that makes them very difficult to use. For example, it supports timers to start/stop noise or to sound an alarm, but instead of putting an easily-usabe button in the UI, it requires going through the menu and manage lists. There’s no quick way to see what timers are available, which are currently active, or add/remove them without manually digging into here. The list of available sounds is right on the main screen, why not a list of timers/alarms. The list of availalbe sounds, mixes, etc., can be added too but I can’t seem to find a way to remove anything. If I experiment with sound mixtures and decide I don’t want some, too bad, they’re there forever. I first installed this on my desktop and found the star “favorite” icon to be a the only way to create a custom list. You remove the star on one list, it gets taken off your favorite’s list. So that was one way to make a custom list even if you had to navigate through your ever-growing other lists. However, when I installed it on my MacBook the same day, the favorite list is prepopulated with things that are not even starred and while I can add things, I still can’t get rid of them. The UI gives you the ability to mix different sounds that move around a 3D space, which seems unneccisary. Having the volume waiver in a pattern would be very useful, but that’s not an option in this app. Instead, you modify the “variance” and the source of the sound seems to move around where you’re sitting. Of course, if you’re not sitting at your computer this just distorts the sound randomly. If you’re playing this app while sleeping across the room, it’ll just distract you. The settings on this feature, especially the “speed” setting, sometimes will not change. I am currently running two sounds, ocean and brown noise, both with speeds at about 20%. The ocean is barely moving, it’s as if it’s less than 5%, but the brown noise is flying all over the place like it’s 100%. If I keep changing the settings over and over, they might eventually work, it’s just random. I did find a setting to disable 3D sound, but it doesn’t appear to work either.

Stay Away!!

Poor sound quality. Have uninstalled it many times and it keeps re-appearing on mu cpmputer. Constantly, daily shows up in the Mac App Store "Updates” tab even w hen its uninstalled. Can’t get rid of it no matter what I do. I consider it frustrationware. Don’t allow this onto your computer because you’ll never get rid of it. It’s zombie-like in its ability to rise from the dead.

Very nice to have a nap listening to the sounds of this app

I enjoy listening to the sounds of this app. But starting from the sound “Air Conditioner” and to the very bottom I find them useless (as for me). I would rather prefer having more relaxing sounds.

Convert Sound not working on Yosemite

Hi White Noise, Just bought the app. Love most of it initially. Haven’t used it yet to sleep but I’m trying to convert a sound and the app shuts down. Have used several file types (.mp3, .wav, .aif) and tried it both with the compress function on and off. Nothing. Shuts the app down everytime. Please fix as I would like to create my own mixes with my own sounds. Appreciated, m iMac 2010, OS X 10.10.2 2.93GHz, i7 16 GB
